Improving navel hygiene and calf health
Four practical cattle-health studies featured at the World Buiatrics Congress 2026
NoBACZ Healthcare are delighted to have supported four posters at the 2026 World Buiatrics Congress in Istanbul, all exploring practical approaches to improving cattle health and welfare while reducing reliance on antibiotics. Covering calf navel care, disbudding wounds, udder cleft dermatitis and digital dermatitis, the projects demonstrate how careful monitoring and effective barrier technologies can support better outcomes under commercial farm conditions.
Dr David Charles MRCVS and Dr Emily Collins-Wingate MRCVS worked with farmer Mark Jelley to determine the effect of replacing 10 % iodine with NoBACZ Navel (UMBIREZ™), on a spring-calving beef suckler farm. Historical records from 2020 to 2024 were compared with data collected after the barrier solution was introduced for the 2025 and 2026 calving seasons, while other aspects of periparturient management remained unchanged.
In the first year following its introduction, the proportion of calves treated for omphalitis fell by 91.6 %, from 12 of 72 calves in 2024 to one of 64 calves in 2025; no cases were reported in 2026. This was accompanied by lower neonatal antibiotic use and a move to only a single navel treatment.
NoBACZ are interested in exploring further opportunities for assessing the outcomes of calf navel treatment, particularly in large herds (>500 calves). If you would be interested in partnering us on this research, please contact us here.
